A beryllium gimbal for the Geosynchronous Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer (GIFTS). A housing of pure beryllium was fabricated by dip brazing. Epner’s task was to polish this priceless construction and coat it with 25 microns high phosphorus electroless nickel followed by 0.5 microns Laser Gold. Laser Gold was chosen for its theoretically low emissivity and helps maintain thermal stability of this crucial instrument.
